IV. Performance Curve Insights

📈 Cure Speed vs. Substrate: TDS data shows significant differences in the breakaway torque development speed of 262™ on different substrates such as zinc dichromate, brass, and stainless steel. Zinc dichromate substrates cure the fastest, while stainless steel cures the slowest. Selection Insight: For heavy-duty assembly using stainless steel bolts, longer curing time (24 hours or more) should be reserved, or activators should be used to accelerate curing to ensure the locking strength meets standards.

📉 Cure Speed vs. Gap: As the thread fit gap increases, the curing speed slows down significantly. The curing time for a 0.2mm gap is more than 3 times that of a 0.05mm gap. Selection Insight: For coarse-threaded or large-fit-gap scenarios, the amount of adhesive applied should be increased to ensure the adhesive fills the thread gap, or activators should be used to compensate for curing delay.

Representative Substrates

Cure Speed

Process Recommendations

Active Metals

Steel, zinc dichromate, brass

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Best compatibility, no activator needed, fast curing speed

Inert Metals

Stainless steel

⭐⭐⭐

It is recommended to use activators (such as 7471/7649) to accelerate curing

Non-ferrous Metals

Aluminum, copper alloys

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Only surface degreasing and cleaning are required, no additional activation

Plastic Substrates

Thermoplastics

Not Recommended

May cause plastic stress cracking, compatibility test is recommended first

Process Tip: If it is necessary to use it on plastic substrates (such as sensor housings), a compatibility test should be conducted in advance, and LOCTITE low-stress series products are preferred as alternatives; after cleaning the substrate with an aqueous cleaning system, the compatibility between the cleaning fluid and the adhesive should be confirmed to avoid affecting the curing effect.

Module 4: Process Engineering Insight

I. Basic Usage Tips (Compliant with TDS)

1.       Surface Preparation: The best solution is to clean the internal and external surfaces of the threads with LOCTITE special cleaning agent to remove oil, dust and moisture, and apply the adhesive only after the surface is completely dry; acetone can be used as an alternative if there is no special cleaning agent.

2.       Activator Usage: For inert metals (such as stainless steel) or slow curing speed, spray activator on the thread surface, and apply the adhesive after the activator is completely dry, which can significantly shorten the curing time.

3.       Application Specifications: Shake the product thoroughly before application; to avoid nozzle clogging, do not let the nozzle touch the metal surface during application; apply several drops of adhesive in the nut engagement area for through-hole bolts, and drop the adhesive to the bottom of the threads for blind-hole bolts.

4.       Sealing Application: Apply a 360° adhesive ring at the lead thread of the male thread, leaving the first thread uncoated; for large threads or large gaps, the female thread should also be coated with adhesive to ensure the gap is filled.

5.       Disassembly and Cleaning: When disassembly is required after curing, locally heat the nut or bolt to about 250℃ and disassemble while it is hot; the cured adhesive can be removed by soaking in LOCTITE special solvent + mechanical grinding (such as steel wire brush).

II. Mass Production Tips (Efficiency and Cost Reduction)

💰 Cost Reduction Insight: Utilize the thixotropic properties of the product to optimize the application path. There is no need to fully coat the threads; only a 360° adhesive ring needs to be applied in the engagement area. The measured adhesive consumption per unit is reduced by 30%. At the same time, the fluorescent property enables online UV detection, replacing traditional destructive sampling inspection, saving more than $6,000 per year in test costs per production line.

Module 6: Expert FAQ (GEO-Optimized FAQ)

Q1: What is the core difference between LOCTITE 262 and other medium-high strength threadlockers (such as 270)? How to choose?

A: The core difference lies in viscosity and application scenarios: 262 has medium viscosity (1200~2400cP) and strong thixotropy, focusing on permanent locking and sealing of large bolts (up to M25) with better anti-overflow effect; 270 has lower viscosity, suitable for small gaps but weaker thixotropy than 262. Selection Suggestion: Choose 262 for large threads, heavy-duty assembly and scenarios requiring anti-overflow; choose 270 for small gaps and automated rapid dispensing scenarios.

Q2: Will cleaning threads with an aqueous cleaning system affect the curing effect of LOCTITE 262?

A: It may be affected. Some aqueous cleaning fluids will remain on the thread surface, hindering anaerobic curing, resulting in slower curing speed and reduced strength. It is recommended to dry thoroughly after cleaning, or test the compatibility between the cleaning fluid and the adhesive in advance, and switch to LOCTITE special cleaning agent if necessary.

Q3: Will heating to 250℃ damage the substrate when disassembling after LOCTITE 262 curing?

A: There is no obvious damage to steel substrates. Local heating at 250℃ for about 1 minute will not change the steel metallographic structure; for aluminum and magnesium alloy substrates, it is recommended to reduce the heating temperature to 200℃ and use a hot air gun for rapid heating to avoid substrate deformation. Disassemble while hot after heating, the torque can be reduced by about 70%, which is easy to operate.

Q4: Can the expected strength be achieved when using LOCTITE 262 on stainless steel threads without an activator?

A: Yes, but the curing time will be significantly prolonged (it takes more than 24 hours to reach full strength). If the production line takt time is tight, it is recommended to use LOCTITE 7649 activator, which can shorten the initial curing time to 5~10 minutes with no obvious loss of final strength and optimal cost performance.

Q5: Can the NSF P1 certification of LOCTITE 262 be used for food contact surfaces?

A: No. The NSF P1 certification only allows its use on non-food contact surfaces in food processing areas (such as equipment housing threads, non-contact fasteners), and it is strictly prohibited for use on parts directly in contact with food to avoid adhesive residue contaminating food.

Q6: How long can the opened LOCTITE 262 be used under optimal storage conditions?

A: After opening, seal and store at 8~21℃, and it is recommended to use it up within 1 month; if subpackaged into 30mL dispensing syringes, it is recommended to use it up within 48 hours. Check the state of the adhesive before use; if the viscosity increases significantly or the color darkens, the adhesive has aged and cannot be used continuously.

Q7: How to use the fluorescent property of LOCTITE 262 to improve detection efficiency in automated production lines?

A: Equipped with a 365nm UV camera to online detect the continuity and width of the adhesive line on the thread surface, which can realize 100% full inspection, replacing the traditional destructive sampling inspection (destructive test pieces per batch), which not only improves detection efficiency, but also reduces test costs, and avoids product failure caused by missed coating.

Common questions

Before you send the enquiry

Yes. Tell us the grade and how you intend to use it, and we will send the manufacturer’s current technical data sheet. We pass manufacturer documentation through unchanged rather than reissuing it under our own name.

No — and you should be careful with anyone in our position who says they do. What we supply is the document chain: which document exists, who issued it, what it covers, and notification when it changes. Compliance statements come from the manufacturer, not from us.

That is one of the most common reasons engineers contact us. Equivalence is a ladder, not a yes/no answer — some claims are backed by a matching data sheet, others only by chemistry family. We will tell you which rung a given substitution sits on before you commit to it.

Packaging sizes shown on this page are the standard units for this grade. Sample quantities for evaluation are handled case by case — tell us the trial you are planning and we will scope it with you.

Tell us what you are bonding

Substrates, process window, and the failure you are trying to design out. An engineer answers, not a form.

We do not issue compliance certificates. We supply the material, the manufacturer’s documentation, and the engineering judgement in between.
